Beards Everywhere! Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska
And Doc and Carrie Paying it Forward
Leslie R. Dye, MD, treasurer, NGWP Rescue
From October 3–9, the German Wirehaired Club of America (GWPCA) hosted the 2023 National specialty week in Lincoln, Nebraska and for the event, Lincoln displayed its best autumn weather. The specialty conformation classes were held in conjunction with Cornhusker Kennel Club’s annual all-breed show at the Lancaster center. It was wirehair heaven with many amazing specimens being shown and others there to observe. The following day, participants and spectators donned extra clothing layers and headed to Branched Oak Field Trial grounds to show our Wires’ hunting abilities. It was a great day in the field followed by an evening of awards and great GWP fellowship.
The proceeds from this event continue to be the biggest fund raiser for our rescue. We were fortunate to have donations for the raffles and our silent auction from generous artists, dog lovers and owners from all over the country (some of them long time breeders with winning records), including a custom-made sequined cooling coat, rare porcelains, beautiful vintage and new artwork, a unique handmade chess set, dishes, art pieces created specifically for rescue, dog toys and treats, quilts, photographs, and many vintage pieces with GWP images etched, engraved, or embedded.
The rescue was able to have a raffle on each day of the indoor show on the show floor. On both evenings, raffles were also performed in the private room reserved for the parent club.
The big event on the evening of the GWPCA membership meeting ended with a silent auction that included bids from Facebook. Many families were in attendance with children, prompting their parents to buy raffle tickets, increasing the competition. Photographs of foxes were particularly attractive to many of the younger people attending the show, prompting the purchase of more raffle tickets.
A special thanks to all of those who donated such amazing items and for those who graciously purchased raffle tickets and bid on auction items. As always, we had the wonderful assistance of Sylvia Miller, who organizes and oversees the raffles and auctions for the GWPCA. She always has everything we need and the things we forget. More importantly, she brings her kindness, energy, humor, and wise counsel to share with us. Her daughter, Tiffany, was also very helpful with our endeavors had a smile to brighten every day. Special thanks to these wonderful ladies.
Doc and Carrie Paying it Forward with Inside Voice
Many of you may remember the blog about Doc from December 11, 2022. It was the most difficult blog I have ever written. Doc’s photo is one of the images on the November page of the rescue calendar for 2022, and I cry every time I look at it. I hope someday I can look at his photo or think about him without crying. What his amazing foster, Carrie Brewer, did recently may get me one step closer.
A non-profit organization, called “Inside Voice” has two goals, according to their website:
- Helping responsible pet owners. When a person who has been responsible with a pet and given them the appropriate care but has a crisis and needs financial help, they “give you a hand up, not a hand out.”
- Helping other non-profits. They help shelters who need pet food and supplies. They help foster.
Carrie donated Doc’s wheel cart to Inside Voice for Toby, who fell from a third floor and suffered a spinal accident. Toby started physical therapy, and Facebook posts show him having a great time with his family on the beach with Doc’s cart.
BLOG DOGS
Want to give two littermates the best holiday gift ever? Consider adopting Miles and Gwen, who are located in Phoenix, Arizona. They are 3 years old, raised with a toddler who is now six-years-old, and have had two years of obedience training. Miles has been neutered and Gwen spayed, and they are good with other dogs and children. Both are superlative hunters and incredible companions, excellent representatives of this versatile breed. This difficult decision was made by their owner due to a serious family illness.
If you have room in your heart and home for these two lovely siblings, please call Suzanne at 860–921–7827.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
As we approach the holidays and the end of the year, please consider a gift to the National German Wirehaired Pointer Rescue. This all-volunteer organization is committed to saving and finding homes for all adoptable GWP’s while being fiscally responsible. This year we have arranged more adoptions than any year before. The veterinary, training, and foster expenses have risen to higher levels too. In addition to donations and fund raisers, we continue to apply for grant money to reverse our deficit. A very special thank you to all of our generous donors. Wishing safe and healthy holidays for you and all of your pets.

About Us
National GWP Rescue is a nationwide rescue program whose volunteers work tirelessly to provide funding, foster homes, medical care and training for GWPs found in shelters, animal control facilities and to those GWPs whose current owners are unable to provide a suitable situation.
Working hand- in-hand with governmental and local shelters, NGWPR provides a safe and responsible home for GWP’s in need. Placed with an experienced GWPCA member, fostered GWPs that have been neglected, untrained or have medical issues quickly blossom as they are readied for their “forever” homes.
Prior to releasing our rescued GWPs for adoption, volunteers provide obedience, manners, and house training. We hold to the philosophy that a mannerly dog has a better chance of fitting into a new household.
NGWPR believes that Wires were designed to hunt and unlike some other rescue programs, we are happy to place dogs with field experience or bird instinct with potential owners who enjoy hunting behind a Wire. However, NGWPR insists that any rescue dog first be a house dog and companion, then a weekend hunting partner.
